With the ever changing digital world, I'm sure there are endless questions you have about social media. Let's take it back to a few key questions you may about social media for a business.
Do I need to be on all the social media platforms?
This question is commonly asked and the short answer for it is no. The mistake people often make is creating accounts which they can’t commit to – Remember, quality over quantity.
Although having many social media accounts will maximize your visibility online, it wouldn’t be worth having them if they are not up to date. You should also remember that not all social media platforms will be right for your business.
What is social media engagement?
Engagement on social media comes in many forms such as likes, comments, shares, saves and video views. Each platform will have its own mechanisms for measuring engagement.
Twitter: Retweets and replies
Instagram: Comments, likes, saves, send to another user
Facebook: Likes, comments, shares.
Engagement also comes from the business in terms of how we engage back with the audience. Keeping conversations, replies and responses active is just as important as receiving them. Many brands have a whole team of people engaging with their social media audience on a daily basis, helping and improving their customer journey on digital, so it’s imperative this is present in your strategy.
How do I reach and engage my audience on social media?
It takes time to reach and engage your target audience, this won’t happen overnight. I’ve worked with brands for months to years growing their audience and engagement rates. The key takeaway here is to learn their engagement behaviors: track it, learn from it and action changes via the content you put out.
Should I post the same thing on all my social media channels?
You can, but this is not best practice.

How often should I post?
This depends on the resource and time you have available; you also need to consider who your target audience is, what they want to see and how often. Again, it's a case of quality over quantity: it’s better to put something out that your audience WANT to see, rather than putting something out for the sake of it.
What’s the best time to post?
This depends on who your audience are and when they are most active.
How do I get more followers?
The simple answer, by giving people a reason to follow you.
How do I know social media is going to work for my business?
Taking it back to basics, social media is all about communicating and interacting with people, in this case, your target audience.
Businesses have aims and objectives to increase awareness of their brand, promote their marketing activity and secure business sales. In today’s world, to maximize these three areas, you need to do it via digital, through social media channels.
Just think about how many times a day you tap into Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Linkedin as opposed to seeing a billboard, watching a TV ad or seeing advertisements in publications. – Today you’re more likely to be influenced online as opposed to offline.
How do I use social media to generate sales?
This question is key for your overall social media strategy. There’s many elements to this including having a clear call to action, building customer loyalty, using social media advertising, growing your audience and brand awareness, implementing a solid PR and/or influencer strategy and more!
How do I measure success?
This answer is not simple, but measuring success is a lengthy process. Putting plans in place to measure your success is key here, so a reporting document for your social channels (weekly, monthly and yearly depending on how small/big your business is) is essential.
